The Benefits of Veneers & How It Works

Veneers have become incredibly popular in recent years since they provide a practical way to get a perfect smile, even for those with very discolored or misshapen teeth. Below is an explanation of how veneers are applied and the biggest benefits of getting them.

How veneers work

As the name would suggest, veneers are shells that are placed over the front of your real teeth in order to correct cosmetic imperfections and provide a better looking smile.

Below are the steps involved in getting veneers –

  • Consultation
The first step is for your dentist to assess your teeth. During this initial phase you can tell your dentist exactly what you’re looking to achieve and they’ll be able to advise you on the best way to proceed. If you decide to go ahead with the treatment then the dentist will likely take x-rays and make moulds of your teeth.
  • Preparation
In order to prepare your teeth for the veneers, your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from them – approximately the same thickness as the veneers. This may be done under local anaesthetic but often this isn’t necessary. Your dentist will take a model of your teeth, which will then be sent off to a laboratory where the veneers are made. It usually takes a week or two for your dentist to receive the veneers back.
  • Bonding
The final step is to bond the veneers to your teeth. During this stage, your dentist will first temporarily place the veneers on your teeth to ensure the right fit and color. The veneers will be trimmed and the color adjusted until your dentist is happy with them. Next your teeth will be cleaned and polished in order to prepare them for the veneers. The veneers are then attached using a special type of cement. Once the cement has set and the veneers are solidly in place, then any excess cement is removed and your dentist will do a full assessment of the veneers, including an assessment of your bite.

The benefits of veneers

  • Get a perfectly white smile
One of the biggest reasons that people get veneers is so they’re able to achieve a perfectly white smile. Beautiful white teeth are something that many people dream of and having veneers fitted is one of the best ways to achieve this. Veneers come with some key benefits over teeth-whitening, including not having to worry about sensitivity and getting a long-lasting solution.
  • Correct any imperfections
Veneers are not just used to give your teeth a white appearance but also to correct any imperfections, such as chips, cracks, wide gaps and an irregular shape. This means that even a person with very yellow, crooked teeth can achieve a perfect smile with veneers.
  • Treated teeth are stain-resistant
This is another huge benefit of veneers. Unlike your regular teeth, veneers are not porous, which means they’re resistant to staining. This means you can enjoy coffee, red wine and other typically staining drinks without having to worry about ruining their appearance.
  • Veneers are long-lasting
With proper dental hygiene, veneers can last for 20 years or more. Regular brushing and flossing are always recommended to help avoid cavities and keep your veneers looking at their best.
